There’s a famous expression about the ability to organise a certain kind of celebration in a brewery. I can confirm that Mia and Ken can, in fact, organise that very special kind of celebration. They did it at The Northern Monk Brewery in the heart of Leeds.
I love to photograph weddings in stately homes, country houses, barns, teepees and marquees. There is always something special about a city centre wedding though. I can’t quite put my finger on it. It could be that the scenery is completely different and as a photographer, it gives a different set of challenges to a tranquil countryside wedding. Certainly, finding a location to shoot some portraits of the bride and groom can be a little more difficult. But, when it comes together and you find an abandoned warehouse with a great window, it makes the extra work worthwhile.
The day started with me meeting Mia at The Hilton on Granary Wharf in the city centre. What a great venue to get ready if you like your views of the city. Before long, we were heading, by vintage bus no less, through the centre of Leeds to the registry office, where Ken was waiting nervously. Then, after a beautiful ceremony, featuring a choir of friends (that’s them reflected in the piano in the photo’s), it was off to The Northern Monk Brewery.
This was the first time that I’ve ever shot at The Northern Monk. In fact, it was the first time that I’ve shot in a brewery and it was the perfect venue for a wedding celebration. The weather certainly helped and everyone made full use of the courtyard for the afternoon. Then, as the evening drew in, it was off to the refectory for the rest of the day’s celebrations and speeches.
The brewery building lent itself perfectly to a wedding celebration. The open plan red brick rooms really suited what Mia and Ken were after and their decor. Also, did I mention that The Northern Monk Brewery makes excellent beer?
